Like most people in med school, I always have a boatload of studying to do, and the weekends are the best time to catch up. I decided that I would fuel myself for the day with some fresh, sugary doughnuts from Rocket 88 Doughnuts, a small doughnut shop out in Fountain Square. It was such a good decision.
Just to clarify, I didn't do this alone! Andrew came along, so we shared this plate of diabetes deliciousness together. Don't worry, my glucose levels are still well controlled (for now).
As you can see from the photo above, we got 4 doughnuts for the 2 of us. Using the photo above: front and to the left is the vegan almond glazed doughnut. Back and to the left is the maple pecan doughnut. To its right is the dark chocolate bacon, and the tiny one in the front and to the right is the earl grey.
You can see them again below in an aerial view. I think it makes them look extra cute.
Naturally, you can't have 4 different types of doughnuts without rating them!
- 4th place: Earl grey - maybe it's because it was a cake doughnut, but this was my least favorite out of all them. It was pleasantly spiced, but all the other 3 were way better for me.
- 3rd place: Dark chocolate bacon - good in theory, and actually very well done in execution. It could have used more bacon though!
- 2nd place: Maple pecan - this. was. awesome. You could taste the maple and the pecans gave a fantastic texture to go along with the soft doughnut. And it's so photogenic! Look at that tasty treat down there.
- Aaaaaaand for first place: the vegan almond glazed doughnut! Who knew vegan doughnuts could actually taste delicious?! This doughnut had a strong almond-y flavor, a lot like the cranberry ginger almond cake I made this past week! And the chew, oh man. That is why you go get fresh doughnuts. Soft and pillowy. A pillow of doughnuts. I wouldn't mind sleeping on that.
Overall, Rocket 88 was a great way to start the Saturday. And for those who live in downtown Indy, it gives you a good excuse to venture out to Fountain Square, a gem for people who love fancy small plates, great ethnic food, and hipster coffeehouses (hopefully posts on those kinds of places to come in the near future!) If you ever have an itch to go check out this place, hit me up. I'd go again in a heartbeat.
I like sugary Saturdays.
